A big question to ask when you’re looking to renovate is “How do I find the right home?” We sat down with Kelli Kaufer to talk about the things she sees and some aspects that people should consider when looking to renovate a home.

Something people need to consider when making this decision is the budget. Go into the home and figure out what spaces you want to renovate and the money. “If you only have a couple thousand dollars, that’s not going to get you far. If you have ten, 15 or $20,000 it makes it a little easier.” It still will depend on what spaces you would like to update. Something you need to make sure you work into your budget is the unforeseen. Once you get into the guts there may be some damage or problems you didn’t know about.

The kitchen is pretty much the number one space people want to renovate. Also creating more of an open space and updating the master bathroom is popular. Remember, creating an open space is more than just removing a wall. Behind that wall could be electric or plumbing. It could also be load bearing. “This is why it’s helpful to have a professional because they have the knowledge to see what needs to happen to update your home efficiently.”

Another thing to keep in mind is the value of the home for the area. You don’t want to over-improve your home and have it priced out of the area. There are a lot of fun things about renovating a home. You can come in and make it completely your own. A key question to consider is, “How do you envision the space, how would you like to use it?”

Remember this is a process and you should consult with somebody who has been through this before and knows what they’re doing. You don’t want to be stepping backwards.
